iSight under Windows XP in VMWare Fusion

Monday, May 19th, 2008

I recently set up a Macbook for my brother in law and one of the things he wanted to do was be able to use the built in iSight camera in the windows XP partition running under VMWare.

To do this you really need to install the Bootcamp drivers that come on the Leopard install disk before you attach the iSight. However if you don’t you’ll find that the iSight doesn’t appear even if you install the drivers.  This is because XP detects it as a random USB hub without the drivers and this will block it being properly detected after.

The solution is to simply use control panel -> system -> hardware and delete the yellow flagged USB device with the iSight disconnected, and then reconnect it which should allow XP to properly add it to your device list.
